The World's First Dinosaur in the Flesh!
What is a Dinosaur Mummy? It is a dinosaur that died and then, before
it fossilized, it became a mummy. Very
few dinosaurs actually became fossils, and of the many thousands of dinosaur
fossils that have been discovered in the last 200 years, only a few mummified
before they became fossilized. And of
those very few, only one is known to have had its entire body preserved both as
a mummy and then a fossil. That single
dinosaur is Leonardo, one of the most important dinosaur discoveries of all
time. To learn more about other mummy
dinosaurs, click here.
As you read the story of Leonardo, you will find not just an interesting story about dinosaurs, but one of how science and scientists work. More than 100 people helped discover Leonardo and the many questions about dinosaurs that he was able to answer. And, like any good story, there are mysteries and even some heartbreaks. In fact, more than a few of the many people on the Leonardo team think that, like some Egyptian mummies, Leonardo had his own Curse of the Mummy!
You can read Leonardo’s story like a book, starting with his discovery, or you can jump around to whatever you find interesting. Along the way, you will learn a lot about science and the scientific method. If you are a parent or teacher, take a look at some of the teaching tools we provide. These are designed to give you a start on discussing science, dinosaurs and natural history. And keep checking back, we will be adding lots more to the site!
